Yami Yugi is the soul that was trapped inside the Millennium Puzzle. He was the Pharaoh of Egypt, or also known as Pharaoh Atem (or Atemu). He welded the Millennium Puzzle after his father, Pharaoh Akunumkanon, and led the six priests who had the other six Millennium Items.
When little Yugi Mutou solved the Millennium Puzzle, Yami's spirit was infused with Yugi's; they are able to switch minds.Yami usually comes out of the puzzle right before the start of a duel. He is a master duelist. At times, Yami would start doubting himself, but Yugi would always encourage him to go on. He has a very complex mind, since his past was hidden away from him. Now Yami's main goal is to unveil his past and find out who he really is.
